Get StartedUnderstanding cerebral folate deficiency
In many children with autism, the body produces autoantibodies (FRAAs) that block special gates called Folate Receptors Alpha (FRα) at the blood-brain barrier. Studies show 70-75% of children with ASD test positive for these antibodies. Even though folate is present in the blood, it cannot get into the brain where it's needed.
Leucovorin (folinic acid) can use a different pathway—the Reduced Folate Carrier (RFC)—to bypass the blocked gates and reach the brain. This is why standard folic acid supplements don't help, but leucovorin might.
