About Meadow
Meadow Health is a physician-led telehealth platform focused on improving health outcomes for children with autism and related neurodevelopmental differences. Meadow Health combines medicine informed by peer-reviewed research, personalized care, and a family-centered approach—delivered securely via telehealth in all 50 states. Meadow Health is a service provided by Meadow Biosciences, Inc.
Meadow Health is designed for families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who are seeking medical care informed by peer-reviewed research, clinicians experienced in autism, personalized care plans, and reliable access to specialized therapies such as leucovorin (folinic acid).
Meadow Health is different because we are physician-led, not coaching-only. We focus on specific biological pathways that may be relevant to some children with autism, not just behaviors. We use peer-reviewed science to guide care, offer nationwide telehealth, provide access to a dedicated, high-quality supply chain for leucovorin free of additives, dyes, lactose, or other ingredients which can negatively impact children with ASD, and design care around the whole child, not a one-size-fits-all model.
Treatment & Safety
Meadow Health clinicians may recommend leucovorin (folinic acid) when medically appropriate, targeted nutritional and metabolic support, lifestyle and dietary strategies, and ongoing monitoring and care optimization. All recommendations are individualized and based on medical history, clinical presentation, and current scientific evidence.
Leucovorin (also known as folinic acid) is a biologically active form of folate. In published research, leucovorin showed potential to support communication and language development in a subset of children with autism. Meadow Health’s clinical leadership includes investigators involved in published clinical trials of leucovorin in autism.
Every child responds differently, and there is no guaranteed timeline. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Frye et al., Molecular Psychiatry, 2018), researchers assessed verbal communication outcomes at the 12-week study endpoint and reported statistically significant improvements in the treatment group compared to placebo, particularly among children positive for folate receptor alpha autoantibodies (FRAA). How your child responds may depend on factors that can include FRAA status, dosing, and individual biology. These are observed correlates in published research, not confirmed predictors of individual response. Some children show no measurable response. Your treating physician will monitor your child’s progress and adjust the care plan based on what they observe.
Folinic acid has been used in medicine for decades. Meadow does not sell or distribute the FDA-approved commercial leucovorin product. Meadow provides telehealth access to licensed clinicians who, based on independent medical judgment and the individual needs of the child, may prescribe a custom-compounded folinic acid preparation prepared by a licensed pharmacy on a patient-specific basis. Use of folinic acid in children with autism spectrum disorder is not an FDA-approved indication. Compounded preparations are not reviewed or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for safety, efficacy, or quality.
The safety profile of any medication depends on the individual patient, the dose, and the clinical context. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of leucovorin in children with autism (Frye et al., Molecular Psychiatry, 2018), no serious adverse events were attributed to leucovorin within the study’s reporting period. Commonly reported side effects in published research include excitability, sleep difficulty, irritability, hyperactivity, and gastrointestinal symptoms (Frye et al., 2018). Individual patient outcomes may differ. Your treating physician will carefully review medical history, assess risks and benefits, start with appropriate dosing, and monitor response and side effects. Regular monitoring of B12 levels is recommended during leucovorin therapy.

Yes. Meadow Health is designed to complement, not replace, existing services such as ABA, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and educational supports. Many families use Meadow Health as the medical foundation that supports progress across therapies.
While our primary focus is families of children with autism spectrum disorder and cerebral folate deficiency, Meadow Health is available to individuals across the lifespan. Emerging research is exploring the role of folate metabolism in other neurological and neuroimmune conditions. Your clinician can discuss whether evaluation for folate-related pathways may be appropriate for your situation.
Meadow Health may be a good fit if you want research-informed, medically guided care, are interested in understanding the biology behind your child’s symptoms, value clinician access and continuity, and prefer a thoughtful, personalized approach. Our intake process helps determine whether Meadow Health is appropriate for your child before moving forward.
